The Summer Olympics kicked off Friday in London with much pomp and circumstance. The games will feature 10,500 men and women competing in 26 sports through Aug. 12.
But don’t just stare in awe at the athletes from the comfort of your couch — get inspired. You don’t need to be an Olympian to stick to a healthy diet and exercise plan.
Here are some tips for jump-starting your fitness routine:
- Play copycat. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so why not re-create your favorite Olympic events? Find spots for canoeing, archery, tennis and weightlifting in York County.
- Watch what you eat. Get five simple tips for counting calories. Smart blogger Leigh Zaleski said it was the most effective way for her to lose weight and keep it off.
- Start small. Swap out your office chair for an stability ball and burn an extra 640 calories each month. Plus it can improve your balance and posture.
- Embrace the insanity. Don’t let the name scare you: Insanity is all the rage in fitness circles these days. Twenty & Change Blogger Ashley May has survived two weeks with Shaun T.
- Be smart. Don’t overdo it at the gym. Smart Health Challenge winner Jess Reed is taking things slow after a back injury. Enlist a friend or personal trainer to help keep you on track.
